We recently headed out green laning in Worcestershire to put a range of 4×4 tyres to the test in real-world off-road conditions. With the help of local guide Green Laning Lennie, we explored a mix of muddy lanes, water crossings, and steep terrain across the Malvern area.

Green Laning in Worcestershire: Terrain & Conditions

Our route began with tight, muddy lanes, where grip was immediately put to the test. The ground was slippery from recent rain, making traction essential from the start.

Across the convoy, we ran a mix of all-terrain and mud-terrain tyres, providing a clear comparison of how each performed in real-world conditions.

Water Crossings, Climbs & Technical Sections

The route included a fast-flowing stream crossing, where the rocky riverbed created a few unpredictable moments. Further on, the terrain opened out into steeper climbs and deeper mud, testing both driver control and tyre performance.

Some sections felt almost untouched, with overgrown tracks and narrow passes adding to the challenge.

Do You Need a Modified 4×4 for Green Laning?

One of the biggest takeaways from the day was how capable a standard vehicle can be with the right tyres.

An unmodified Nissan Pathfinder handled the terrain confidently on a good set of all-terrain tyres, while more heavily modified vehicles with mud-terrain tyres had extra grip in deeper sections.

For most routes, tyre choice makes a bigger difference than heavy modifications.

Why Tyres Matter for Green Laning

Tyres play a key role in off-road performance, particularly on mixed terrain such as mud, gravel, and water crossings.

All-terrain tyres offer a strong balance for most drivers, while mud-terrain tyres provide extra grip in more extreme conditions. Choosing the right tyre depends on how challenging your routes are likely to be.
