Growing Up Off-Road

Dave’s introduction to off-road driving began at an early age. His parents took him to club competitions when he was still a baby, giving him an early connection to the sport and shaping his long-term passion for 4x4s.

A Master of Many Machines

Dave has experience driving a wide range of off-road vehicles, from classic Land Rover 110s and Range Rovers to more specialised builds such as Bowler Defenders. He has also driven heavily modified vehicles, including a Discovery fitted with a high-performance engine.

This breadth of experience reflects his adaptability and understanding of different vehicle setups across a variety of terrains.

Baja Dreams

One of Dave’s long-term ambitions is to compete in the Baja 1000, one of the world’s most demanding off-road races. The event’s scale, endurance, and technical challenge make it a natural goal for experienced drivers seeking to push their limits.

For Dave, it represents the next step in his off-road journey.

Staying in Control

Dave explains that confidence behind the wheel stems from experience and an understanding of how a vehicle behaves in different conditions. Although he rarely feels nervous when driving, he notes that being a passenger in difficult situations can feel far less predictable.

This perspective underscores the importance of control, awareness, and respect for the challenges of off-road driving.

Whitecliff 4x4: A Family Legacy

Dave’s involvement in off-road driving goes beyond competition. He is the chief instructor at Whitecliff 4×4, a training centre founded more than 25 years ago by his mother, Geraldine, and her colleagues.

Having grown up in the business, Dave developed his driving skills early and has remained closely connected to the centre throughout his life.

Sharing the Knowledge

Today, Dave draws on his experience to train drivers of all skill levels at Whitecliff 4×4. The centre offers a range of courses covering off-road driving techniques, vehicle control, and recovery skills.

Training is delivered in line with recognised industry standards, helping drivers build confidence and deepen their understanding of 4×4 capability.
