Winter Breakdown Blues:
Tyres Remain Top Culprit
Winter driving in the UK can be a trial, and recent figures reveal a concerning trend: breakdowns are on the rise, and tyre issues are the primary cause. Between November 2023 and February 2024, a total of 90,852 vehicles experienced breakdowns on British roads, an 11.3% increase compared to the same period the previous year (81,617).
12.3% increase in tyre-related winter breakdowns
For the third consecutive year, tyres have emerged as the most common cause of winter breakdowns. The number of tyre-related incidents rose to 16,943, a 12.3% increase from the 15,083 recorded the year before, and a substantial 23.9% jump from the 13,680 incidents in 2021/22. Tyre problems now account for 18.6% of all winter breakdowns.

Beware the 8th of February
While tyres lead the pack, other common causes include loss of power (7.2% of breakdowns), engine failure (3.2%), and running out of fuel (2.5%). Clutch and gear issues also contributed, representing 2.2% of breakdowns.
Interestingly, February saw the highest number of breakdowns (21,959), and the 8th of February was statistically the most common day for a breakdown, with 3,332 incidents reported.

This data, obtained via a Freedom of Information request by Cinch to National Highways, underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance, particularly tyre checks, before and during the winter months. Drivers are advised to ensure their tyres are in good condition and appropriate for winter conditions to minimize the risk of breakdowns. Tyre Trouble on the Motorway? Here’s What To Do
Experiencing a tyre issue on the motorway can be a daunting experience. Your safety and the safety of other road users is paramount. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do:
- Don’t Panic: Stay calm and assess the situation. Try to identify the specific tyre problem (puncture, blowout, etc.).
- Maintain Control: Grip the steering wheel firmly and avoid sudden braking. Instead, gently ease off the accelerator and allow your vehicle to slow down gradually.
- Signal and Move Left: Indicate your intention to move to the left and carefully steer towards the hard shoulder or emergency refuge area. For information on smart motorway safety, visit the government website.
- Stop Safely: Once on the hard shoulder, stop as far to the left as possible, ensuring your vehicle is completely off the carriageway.
- Activate Hazards: Immediately switch on your hazard warning lights to alert other drivers.
- Exit Carefully: If it’s safe to do so, exit your vehicle from the left-hand side, away from traffic. Ensure all passengers also exit safely.
- Move Away from the Vehicle: Stand well away from your vehicle, ideally behind the barrier, and wait for assistance.
- Call for Help: Contact your breakdown service (e.g., AA, RAC) or the emergency services, providing them with your location and the nature of the problem. If you’re unsure of your location, use roadside marker posts or location apps.
- Stay Safe: Do not attempt to repair the tyre yourself on the hard shoulder. Wait for professional assistance.
By following these steps, you can minimize the risk and ensure your safety while dealing with a tyre issue on the motorway.
